Dan Pearson is one of our most accomplished and innovative of our garden designers today. He's also a most accomplished garden writer I've already reviewed Spirit Garden Inspiration, his previous book to this one and I love his regular column in The Observer.
I've often wondered what Pearson's own garden must be like and in this book we finally get an insight. It doesn't disappoint, especially as Howard Sooley has taken a remarkable set of photographs to accompany the prose. I loved the delightful little plant close ups sprinkled in the margins of the book as well as the more usual single and double page spreads.
We're treated to a year in the life of Pearson's garden. If you're expecting a designery kind of tome, you'll be disappointed. This is more about one man's approach to his garden, getting the feel of the soil and how and why certain decisions were made. This is a man who thinks deeply about his garden and takes his time. It's a heartfelt and personal volume and is much richer as a result.
It also turns out to be a final 'love letter' to the author's garden as soon after the book was written, Pearson decided to move from London to an area very close to where I live. I hope that sometime I might get to glimpse this new garden for real.
